BACKGROUND

Snapchat, originally named Picaboo (an ephemeral photo sharing app), was launched in 2011 as a social-messaging app that allowed its users to send pictures or short video clips called “snaps” (with messages) that disappeared once the receiver had viewed the content. It was developed as a class project by former Stanford University students Reggie Brown (Brown), Robert Murphy (Murphy), and Spiegel. The three friends thought of the app as a business idea that would allow people to send “disappearing photos.” Brown left (and later sued) the company; Murphy became Chief Technology Officer; and Spiegel took charge as Chief Executive Officer.
